call for time - Welcome to Hell...Photography by Drew Blood
"Welcome to Hell" is a photography show. That much is easy, however, getting the photos was not. The 32 photographs in this show are "magic" (not Earving Johnson, but magic none the less). For his entire residency in Los Angeles, Drew Blood has been snapping pictures and popping flashes like a hyperactive child with a roll of bubble wrap. Six years and thousands of photos later, he felt is was time to go through them, a daunting task to say the least. Themes began to emerge: cars, graffiti, weirdos… Things that we come across every day in the city began to lay out a patterns of the life, energy and views that we (un)willingly subject ourselves to as residents of this quasi-utopia.

11am-7pm - Jamie Isenstein exhibit
"This way to the Egress," read a sign commonly found near a door in P.T. Barnum's travelling exhibitions. Those curious enough to make their way through this door found themselves suddenly locked outside (egress being a fancy term for 'exit') and of course, they'd have to pay again for re-entry. In this way, not unlike the fabled cat, curiosity was rewarded. Jamie Isenstein's new exhibit at the Hammer plays with this conceit, portraying double and triple entendres in her work. This time, we think, curiosity will get its comeuppance. http://www.hammer.ucla.edu Hammer Museum 10899 Wilshire Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90024 310-443-7000
11pm - Harvey Finklestein's Sock Puppet Showgirls
Harvey Finklestein's Sock Puppet Showgirls is a parody of the Joe Eszterhas film Showgirls -- as performed by sock puppets. The play, like the film, follows an ambitious young drifter as she navigates her way through the world of power, topless dancing, seduction, vulgarity, gambling and sex that we call Las Vegas. If you haven't seen sock puppets pole dance, you haven't experienced the true power of the theater. http://www.myspace.com/theatreasylum 6320 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90038

call for time - Elena Monzo - "Inside"
We were all caught up in several galleries in Chinatown when we happened on Elena Monzo's exhibition of new works. After seeing all the pop-contempo nonsense at the neighboring galleries, it was refreshing to see clear craftsmanship in her large, wall-installed illustrations. While the subject matter might not be for everyone (it's a bit graphic in a playful kind of way) we were delighted to see someone showing discernible signs of artistic skill. http://www.bonellicontemporary.com 936 Mei Ling Way Los Angeles, CA 90012

JOY DIVISION "CONTROL" Late-1970s British post-punk band Joy Division was one of the most influential groups of their time, inspiring U2, Kurt Cobain, The Cure, Interpol and countless "goth rock" bands. Sam Riley gives an unforgettable performance as the troubled, enigmatic leader of the Manchester band, Ian Curtis, whose talent for singing intense, darkly infectious pop songs (such as "Love Will Tear Us Apart") was subverted by mood swings, bouts of epilepsy and a crumbling marriage. Samantha Morton (In America, Minority Report) plays his wife, upon whose memoir the film is based. Feature debut of acclaimed photographer and music video director Anton Corbijn PLAYING AT 4pm, 7pm, and 9:50pm

Julius Shulman, just having recently celebrated his 97th birthday, has been given an exhibit of his Los Angeles photographs on display at the Central Library.
